Why dentistry?

Growing up in rural Michigan, Dr. Benjamin Turnwald became a dentist in Schaumburg because he always loved developing relationships with people. It was his goal to bring the small town friendliness from his hometown to Benjamin Turnwald Dentistry.

His love for dentistry developed when he job shadowed a dentist, and a patient entered the dentist’s office crying in pain from a toothache. The dentist treated her, and she walked out feeling so much better and hugged the dentist. Ever since that day, Dr. Turnwald never looked back.

Your Wonderful Hy-geniuses

Dental Hygienist

Tell us about yourself.

“I was born and raised in Illinois. I lived in Colorado for five years before moving back to Illinois. I am married and enjoy being outdoors and gardening. I consider it yard therapy… it’s good for my soul.”

Why did you choose dentistry?

“I did a career aptitude test when I was young and dental hygiene was a choice I did not know anything about. Fortunately for me, it has been a perfect fit for 25 years! The best part of my job is providing a comfortable atmosphere to help patients work through their dental fears and to help them achieve their goals for their dental health.”

Previous Experience and Educational Achievements:

  • Dental assistant in high school
  • Received Dental Hygiene degree from Parkland College in Champaign, IL

What do you do outside the office?

“I enjoy the outdoors. Like I mentioned, gardening is yard therapy because it’s good for my soul. I’m married and we have a home in Wisconsin that we try to enjoy with our family and friends as often as possible. My hero has always been Abe Lincoln… he was hard-working, self-taught, courageous, and humane. Also, my mom taught me to ‘always give 100%,’ and I live by that every day. I believe if I were a flavor of ice cream, I would be mint chip because I am not vanilla – I’m sweet with bits of fun throughout!”

Dental Hygienist

Tell us about yourself.

“My family includes my husband Mike, and my dog Finn. We have lived in Schaumburg for the past several years, and really like it! Prior to becoming a dental hygienist, I was a dental assistant, and that’s when I fell in love with the dental field. I knew I wanted to be a bigger role in a dental office and that is why I returned as a dental hygienist.”

Why did you choose dentistry?

“I chose dentistry because I love the interaction with the patients, and oral health is a very important part of your body’s overall health. My job includes them both!”

Previous Experience and Educational Achievements:

  • Michigan State University-Bachelor of Arts degree
  • Harper College- Associates Degree in Applied Science
  • Registered Dental Hygienist- State of Illinois
  • Nitrous Oxide certified

What do you do outside the office?

“I love to go camping during the summer with my husband, dog and any friends who want to sleep outside 🙂 My dog is also a certified therapy dog and we go to Chicago Public Schools so the students can practice reading to him. Of course, I also love traveling! When I was younger that saying drove me nuts, but now I TOTALLY understand what she is talking about and use it myself. I believe if I were a flavor of ice cream, I would be Moosetracks because it is a mix of all the best flavors and ingredients!”

Your Personal Sidekicks

Dental Assistant

Tell us about yourself.

“I love to spend time with my family. I have two handsome boys, Kevin and Kayden, a beautiful daughter, Kamila, and an amazing husband, Brandon. I try to spend as much time with them and they sure do keep me busy. I love to do things outdoors which keeps my kids busy. I also love fall weather!”

Why did you choose dentistry?

“I chose dentistry because when I was growing up I saw that my family didn’t really have a lot of knowledge about teeth and how important it is to keep your mouth healthy, so to me it is a passion to let people know about the importance of oral health. The best part of my job is making sure every single one of my patients feels comfortable and at ease. I love seeing the transformations in people’s smiles. It’s hard to say ‘I love to go to work every day’ when you don’t enjoy what you do, but I really feel like I can say that because I absolutely love what I do!”

Previous Experience and Educational Achievements:

  • Been in the dental field for about eight years
  • Attended Everest College, becoming a Dental Assistant
  • Certification in coronal polishing, sealants, and sedation

What do you do outside the office?

“I love to be outdoors or curl up with a good book. My mom is my personal hero because she is the most amazing woman I know. She is so strong and does anything to make sure her family is taken care of. She is just a great inspiration. She’s always taught me to ‘never let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish what you want.’ I believe if I were a flavor of ice cream, I would be chocolate because it’s very rich and full of flavor.”

Why did you choose dentistry?

“I didn’t choose dentistry; dentistry chose me. After working in a few other medical related jobs, I met a dentist who introduced me to the field, and I’ve never looked back. Previous Experience and Educational Achievements:

What do you do outside the office?

“When I’m outside of work, I love to spend time with my family, husband, baby, 3 dogs, and friends. We love to be out and about and being outdoors. My personal heroes would definitely be my mom and dad, teaching me to be strong, independent, and kind. My mom has always told me to be aware of my surroundings, and I find that taking me through my life and is something I will pass on to my child as he grows. If I were an ice cream flavor, I would be moose tracks because it has all of the best flavors mixed in one.”
